Anne Hathaway covers Allure’s September issue, and inside, she shares insight into requests she has gotten from directors over the decades regarding her waist-line.

Back in 1999, Hathaway, then 16, landed her first gig on the drama series Get Real. Unfortunately, Hathaway wasn’t able to celebrate.

She told Allure: “At 16 years old, it was ‘Congratulations, you have the part. I'm not saying you need to lose weight. I'm just saying don't gain weight.' Which, of course, means you need to lose weight.”

And two decades later, the 36-year-old is getting figure directives from directors. Thankfully, it seems Hollywood has become a more body positive place.

“I have costume designer Ane Crabtree asking me what my body does on my moon—which I realized meant my period—and so she can make adjustment for me,” Hathaway said. “It was just this beautiful thing.”

And director Dee Ross actually advised she gain 20 pounds to play Elena McMahon, a journalist turned arms dealer in The Last Thing He Wanted.

But hold your applause! “I am cautious in my praise of how Hollywood is shifting,” she noted. “There is so much more body inclusivity—which is great!—but the thin thing is definitely still the centralized ‘normal' expectation.”
