Bella Hadid is apologizing after some called her out for what they perceived as insensitive an insenstive tweet. She posted a photo of her shoe facing a Saudi Arabian and United Arab Emirates aircraft, and social media users were quick to point out that displaying the sole of the shoe towards something in Middle Eastern countries is a sign of disrespect.
“I would never want my posts or platform to be used for hate against anyone especially those of my own beautiful and powerful heritage,” she wrote in a lengthy message. “I love and care so much about the Muslim and Arab side of my family.”
The 25-year-old supermodel is half Dutch and half Pakistani. Soon after she posted the tweet, #BelladHadidIsRacist started trending.
She continued, “The photo of my shoe on my story yesterday had nothing to do with politics. I promise. I never noticed the planes in the background and that is the truth. I would never mean to disrespect these airlines, let alone these amazing countries.”
Hadid has often spoken out in support of the Islamic community. In March, she condemned a New Zealand mosque attack that killed 49 people.
