Now, for something new. Juliette Binoche ventured where few other women in Hollywood have dared, and came out with words of praise for the disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein.
Weinstein, who is facing criminal trial on sex charges in New York and has been accused of misconduct, including rape by dozens of women, has largely been considered personal non grata since allegations arose.
Binoche, who starred in Chocolat and The English Patient (both distributed by Miramax Films, co-founded by Weinstein) spoke out on Thursday at the Berlin Film Festival, where she is leading the jury. She saidshe never had problems with Weinstein, though she “could see he had problems”.
Deeming him a “great producer,” she said, “I’m trying to put my feet in his shoes. He’s had enough, I think. A lot of people have expressed themselves. Now justice has to do its work.
In 2017, Binoche shared her own #MeToo moment, and said it prepared her for working with Weinstein. “I knew very well what beast there was in him,” she continued. “The kind of guy I will never go to have fun with. I had lunch with him once one-on-one in his suite. I did not feel any danger, but I did not understand why he wanted to see me.”
