A new Paul McCartney “Essentials” playlist has popped up on Apple Music. The 26-track collection spans most of McCartney's post-Beatles career, with a hefty dose of Wings and solo classics — including such favorites as “Band On The Run,” “Maybe I'm Amazed,” “Silly Love Songs,” “Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five,” “Another Day,” “Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey,” “My Brave Face” “Let 'Em In,” “Live And Let Die,” and “With A Little Luck,” among others.
In addition to recent picks — “New,” “Fuh You,” and “Come On To Me” — the set features “Macca's” recent One World: Together At Home telethon performance of his reworked solo rendition of “Lady Madonna.”
The new playlist features four songs from McCartney's 1973 chart-topping and Grammy Award-winning Band On The Run album. For years, the story going around was that McCartney's 1973 hit “Jet,” was actually inspired by his family's Labrador puppy — but McCartney explained it was another of the family's pets that sparked off his legendary whimsical imagination: “Yeah, we had a little pony for the kids in Scotland, it was called, 'Jet.' And, y'know, the truth is that's just a starting point. That's what I often do and I think that does often puzzle people a bit.”
The new “Essentials” playlist features Paul McCartney's two chart-topping duets; 1982's “Ebony And Ivory” with Stevie Wonder and 1983's “Say Say Say” with Michael Jackson. During an appearance on CBS's The Late Show with David Letterman, McCartney recalled a late-1981 phone call from the soon-to-be “gloved one”: “It was Christmas, and I was at home. And my phone rang, and a little voice, (laughter) y'know, talked to me. And I said, 'Who's this?' — Y'know, kind of guarding my privacy, private number — I said, 'Who's this? (adapts high-pitched feminine voice) 'It's Michael.' I said (adapts gruff voice) 'Michael who?' 'Cause I thought it was a little bit, sort of, dodgy. But, anyway, he said, 'Michael Jackson.' He said, 'You wanna make some hits?' So, I said, 'Yeah (laughter) sure.' So. . . Y'know, being of the hit-making variety. . . (laughter).”
