Squeeze has added 10 new stops to its upcoming summer run, dubbed, “The Difford And Tilbrook Songbook 2019.” The dates now on the books include gigs in New Hampshire; Pennsylvania; Washington, D.C.; Massachusetts; Wisconsin; Minnesota; Nebraska; Colorado; Washington; Oregon; and Texas.
The band's original tour announcement promised an “extensive list of hits as well as some rare, lesser known gems from their back catalogue and solo careers of Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook.”
In addition to co-founders Difford & Tilbrook, the band's current lineup is rounded out by Simon Hanson on drums, Stephen Large on keyboards, Yolanda Charles on bass, and Steve Smith on percussion. Back in October 2017, Squeeze released its 15th studio set, titled The Knowledge.
Glenn Tilbrook, who writes the music and melodies to Squeeze’s songs from Chris Difford’s already completed lyrics, has always been frank about the fact that neither he, nor any of the original members of Squeeze, considered themselves a “band of brothers” — and said that the situation didn't come to a head until the first of the band’s several splits back in 1985: “As great as our writing was; Chris and I were already heading in different directions. I didn’t feel particularly close to anyone in the band, but we were a great band, so I didn’t really worry about all that. As long as we got on with the work, and then we’d (live) our social lives increasingly more separately.”
Chris Difford recalled the heady early days of Squeeze back in the late-1970's and early-'80s when they were a powerful presence on the British record charts: “‘Up The Junction’ was selling, like, 15,000 copies a day, which is a lot of records. And the industry was on fire in those days — people were selling lots of records. The industry’s completely changed now. If I sold, y’know, 15,000 records a day now, I’d be Adelle (laughs). That’s a fine thought.”
